Preparing for A Day Hike

The Author of this post is Cheryl Martinez

Nothing relaxes me like a hike in the woods. It seems easy to find some inner peace while in the serenity of nature. My mind and heart becomes absorbed into the surrounding peace while I am enjoying the scenic walk.

I usually begin preparing for a good day hike at least a couple weeks before. I watch the weather to make sure there are no unsettled weather patterns coming up that might spoil the day. I also choose a hike of about 10 miles. This allows me to go along at a slower rate and enjoy the day.

My favorite 10 miler is called Backbone. It is in a wilderness area and offers varied terrain. I would say it is a moderate hike as far as difficulty. There are plenty of even places to walk alongside the creek; but also some decent chances to climb uphill. It’s the perfectly well rounded hike.

We all know we should take plenty of healthy snacks and fluids. But there are a couple of other very important things I do as safety precautions. First, I always tell someone where I will be for the day; and I fill out the information card at the trail head. The morning of the hike I set my home security alarm to protect my belongings while I am gone; and I am off! It wasn’t hard at all finding ADT security system around San Diego, so now I can hike with peace of mind.
